I made this up on the fly to help noobs with choosing
basemaps and chipped ECU features. If you can think
of anything I missed, hit me up.
Here is a short glossary of terms for noobs that pertains
to basemaps and chipping -
ECU - Engine Control Unit.
Chipping / Socketing - Modifying the factory ECU to accept
28 pin EPROM chips that alter the fuel and timing characteristics
of the engine.
EEPROM / CHIP - 28 pin ROM chip that holds the .bin file
which alters the engine.
ZIF Socket - A quick release socket for easy installation/removal of EPROM chips. This socket is soldered into an ECU that accepts EPROM chips.
DIP Socket - A standard socket with no quick release making installation/removal of the EPROM chip difficult. This socket is soldered into an ECU that accepts EPROM chips.
Datalogging - Obtaining information from the ECU (usually through
a cable to a laptop) pertaining to critical issues such as air / fuel
mix, ignition timing, engine temp and more.
Datalogging Header - A 4 pin "jack" that is soldered to the ECU
which enables datalogging.
Rev Limiter / Limit - A "cap" on the maximum RPM your engine
is allowed to hit.
Launch Control - From a stop with the clutch engaged, launch
control is a mini rev limiter that allows the driver to push the
pedal to the floor and stay at his desired take off RPM.
Example - a 3900 RPM launch control. Once the vehicle starts
moving, this feature disengages.
Two Step - Programming a stopped launch control and a
second rev limiter while the vehicle is moving.
Vtec Crossover - At what RPM Honda's Vtec feature engages.
Shift Light - A feature that enables the tuner to set the Check
Engine Light to light up at a predetermined RPM which cues
the driver that it's time to shift.
Speed Governor - A programmed speed cutoff that won't allow
the vehicle to go beyond a predetermined MPH.
